Haroon Khan
Professor of Political Science

A valuable lesson for any student is to be disciplined, meet the deadline, and use brainstorming for critical thinking.

Haroon Khan says he enjoys teaching students who are interested in learning about the subject matter and, therefore, finds much satisfaction in their success.

In the classroom, Khan focuses on critical thinking and current issues related to the subject.

Khan joined the Henderson State faculty in 1990 as an assistant professor of political science, and was promoted to professor in 1998.

He earned an M.A. in political science from Eastern Illinois University, and an M.Phil. and Ph.D. in political science from the University of Kansas.

Many of his students earn degrees in public administration and public management.

"I urge these students to go for government jobs," Khan says. "With a degree in public administration/public management, they will have a lot of opportunities because there will always be vacancies in the government, which is the largest employer."

Khan says Henderson's public administration program prepares students well for public- and private-sector jobs. The degree is based on political science and business courses. Students also take courses in technical writing and introduction to computers to help prepare them for administrative jobs.

They can also pursue a master's degree in public or business administration. Some seek law degrees.

When he's not in the classroom, Khan enjoys a good adventure.

"I love to travel and see different places," he says. "I also enjoy doing research and publishing articles and books."

In March 2017, Khan received the Outstanding Scholarship Award from the Arkansas Political Science Association.

He received a Senior Fulbright Fellowship in 1998-99 and has been honored with four Faculty Excellence awards during his tenure at Henderson.

He has published several books, including:

The Lack of Good Governance in the Global South: An Analysis of its Effects

President Nixon and the India-Pakistan Conflict over Bangladesh

An Introduction to Public Administration

Public Administration: An Introduction

Khan has also written numerous articles for books and journals, along with many conference papers.
