Purpose:
The COMPASS test is used as a means of assessment, advising, and orientation developed by ACT to identify the entering student's basic skill levels in math, reading, and language usage. The primary goal of this assessment process is to efficiently and effectively gather information about the skills, needs, and plans of the entering student to assist in developing and implementing a sound program of study that will lead to the student's goals.

Requirements:
For admission to Henderson:
In order to take the COMPASS, the candidate

  • must be at least 21 years old, and
  • out of secondary school for three or more years.

A person does NOT take the ASSET or COMPASS test if he or she

  • has taken college-level courses at another college or university;
  • has a degree from another college or university;
  • is currently enrolled in college-level courses; or
  • prefers to take the ACT.


As a Re-test for ACT or SAT

  • The candidate must have scored 16 or better in EACH AREA (English, Math, Reading) of the ACT.
  • If the SAT was taken April 1, 1995, or after, the candidate must have scored 390 in mathematics and 420 in reading.

Description:
Entering students who meet the requirements to take the COMPASS test are tested in Writing Skills, Intermediate Algebra, and Reading. The COMPASS is un-timed.  An ACT-approved calculator may be used on the Intermediate Algebra test.


Test Schedule and Registration Procedures:
The COMPASS test is administered Monday through Fridays and are  arranged by appointment.  To make an appointment, please call (87) 230-5470 or go to CAS 125.  Test fee is $20.

On the Day of the Test:

  1. Bring a picture I.D.  An ACT approved calculator may be used on the intermediate algebra test.
  2. Report to Caplinger 121.

Scores:
On the COMPASS test, score results are printed out on completion of the tests.  Students may go to Foster 106 or call (870)230-5386 for advisement after the test. A copy is turned into the Admissions Office or the Registrar's Office as required.
