Helpful Links for Students

The major benefit to having the internet is that it gives anyone quick and easy access to a vast amount of knowledge. It has been said before that the most important thing about education is not about knowing or memorizing everything, but to learn how to quickly find and understand what you need.  This page is to assist any students with this process by listing some links to some common questions and utilities.

Microsoft Student Advantage Program

Click Here - Henderson State University has partnered with Microsoft to provide all students a FREE copy of the latest version of Microsoft Office (Including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and others).  Click the link and follow the instructions to activate and download your copy.

Beneficial programs and tips

Viruses, Malware and Adware are common things to watch out for.  There are so many different types that it is impossible to know what would have to be done to remove them without the aid of programs that protect against and remove them.  If you do not have anything, you might want to consider these programs.  All of these will have a free version, but some may have a version available for sale.  Please make sure that you download and install the version that you want to use.

Antivirus (only install 1)

  • Microsoft Security Essentials - A free antivirus program that works well with Windows.
  • Avast -  A great antivirus program that can be installed for free or purchased for additional features.
  • AVG - A great antivirus program that can be installed for free or purchased for additional features.

Maintenance  

  • Malwarebytes -  A great program to find and remove Malware.
  • CCleaner -  A program to remove 'Bloatware' off of a system.
  • Should I Remove It? - A program designed to advise on if a program is useful, or if it is safe / recommended to uninstall.
  • Revo Uninstaller - Use this program if you are having trouble removing a program from your computer.

Various Helpful Programs  

  • Ninite - Quickly download and install various common Applications
  • VLC Player - A media player that is able to play a wide range of video file types.
  • Libre Office - A free program that is very similar to Microsoft Office.

Browsers

There are numerous browsers that are used to surf the web.  Each browser is organized a different way, but all of them tend to allow the same features.  Your overall selection just a matter of personal preference.

  • Internet Explorer - The most common browser in use.  It automatically comes with any Microsoft Operating System.  Although it is the most common, it is typically slower that other popular browsers (like Firefox, Google Chrome, etc...).
  • Firefox - The second most common browser in use.  It is faster than Internet Explorer, and works wonderfully.
  • Google Chrome - A widely used browser that was created by Google.  Chrome is faster than Internet Explorer, and it emphasizes a clean and organized look.  It also incorporates many Google features like Google translate.
  • Apple Safari - This is the browser that automatically comes with any Apple Operating System.
