Department of Advanced Instructional Studies
Department of Advanced Instructional Studies Mission Statement
The mission of the Department of Advanced Instructional Studies is to enable teachers to develop expertise in specific content areas, to model effective 21st Century pedagogical skills, to use varied and appropriate media to communicate effectively with diverse audiences, and to promote high moral and ethical professional standards and dispositions.
As you can see by our mission statement, the Department of Advanced Instructional Studies is all about teachers and effective teaching. We have programs designed for licensed teachers who wish to expand their teaching and content knowledge. The Master of Science in Education (MSE) in ADVANCED INSTRUCTIONAL STUDIES provides a post-baccalaureate opportunity for licensed teachers to expand their knowledge of pedagogy, as well as content knowledge. The program consists of 36 credit hours, including 18 hours in core professional education and the remainder in professional education and/or academic content. Content specialization course requirements may range from 9 to18 hours, depending on the area of specialization. Candidates in the MSE in ADVANCED INSTRUCTIONAL STUDIES program must choose a specialization area from early childhood, middle school, ESL, English, interdisciplinary studies, mathematics, or physical education.
We also have programs that will lead to additional licensure in reading, special education, and educational leadership. If you are a college graduate and wish to become a teacher at the middle school or secondary levels, check out our Masters of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program. It is part of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. We designed it especially for you.
I invite you to explore the educational opportunities that are available to you through our department. We have advanced degrees in Special Education, Reading, and Educational Leadership. If you have questions concerning the programs described in this site, I invite you to contact me.
