Policies for Matching Scholarships

These policies apply to matching scholarships suchs as El Dorado Promise, Norphlet, Fordyce and Parkers Chapel.

Henderson State University will match up to the value of the above listed scholarship awards not to exceed the cost of tuition, mandatory fees, room, board, and up to $600 books purchased from the on-campus bookstore with vouchers issued by the university minus any federal, state, or other nonrefundable aid received.

Recipients of any Henderson matching award must live in university-owned housing (excluding Whispering Oaks) and participate in a minimum 10 meal plan.

All recipients of Henderson State University scholarships must file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid at www.fafsa.ed.gov. If the student is not eligible for federal aid based on family income, contact the Financial Aid Office to submit validating documents.

Henderson State University scholarships are non-refundable. (The only exception is the Board of Trustees Scholarship stipend.) Private non-refundable scholarships, federal grants including Pell Grants, and state aid awards will be applied to the student’s account to cover direct costs* billed by the university before any Henderson matching scholarship is applied. If any direct costs remain, then Henderson matching scholarships will be applied. If no direct costs remain, Henderson matching scholarship awards will not be applied to the student’s account. Even if the award is not applied to the student’s account, the student retains scholarship eligibility by meeting retention criteria each semester.

*Direct costs for matching scholarships are tuition, fees, room, board, and books purchased from the on-campus bookstore with vouchers issued by the university. Direct costs are billed to the student’s account by the university.
 

How Financial Aid will Credit Your Account

Scholarships and other financial aid will be applied to the student’s account to cover direct costs billed by the university in this order:

1. Private non-refundable scholarships* including El Dorado Promise, Norphlet, Fordyce, Parkers Chapel

2. Federal grants including Pell Grants

3. State aid awards including Arkansas Academic Challenge Scholarship

4. Henderson State University performance scholarships

5. Henderson State University academic scholarships

6. Henderson State University matching awards for El Dorado Promise, Norphlet, Fordyce, Parkers Chapel

7. Private refundable** scholarships

8. Student loans

*Private non-refundable scholarships are those offered to a student by an agency, group, individual, etc. other than Henderson State University and the grantor specifies that no amount can be refunded to the student.

** Private refundable scholarships are those offered to a student by an agency, group, individual, etc. other than Henderson State University and the grantor specifies that any amount not needed to cover direct costs billed by the university can be refunded to the student. If the grantor does not specify whether the award is refundable or non-refundable, the university awards it as a refundable scholarship.

If all direct costs have been met and the student has funds remaining from private refundable scholarships, student loans, federal grants including Pell Grants, and refundable state awards, the student will receive a refund. If all direct costs have been met by such awards, Henderson matching scholarship awards will not be applied to the student’s account. Henderson scholarships are non-refundable, with the exception of the Board of Trustees stipend. Even if the award is not applied to the student’s account, the student retains scholarship eligibility by meeting retention criteria each semester.
