English as a Second Language Academy

The ESL Academy, which is co-sponsored by the Arkansas Department of Education and Henderson, is designed to provide participating teachers with an ESL endorsement on their existing licensure. A typical ESL teacher-training program of this kind would require a year to two-year commitment. However, participants of the Academy can obtain the endorsement over the course of 13 days of intensive training plus the time it takes to complete course work and submit ESOL Praxis scores. We encourage all ESL Academy students to complete course work before the next semester begins. Four graduate-level or undergraduate-level ESL endorsement classes are offered on Henderson’s campus and usually at am off campus site. Approximately twenty presenters from across the country and world are brought in to teach the classes. All are the top in their respective fields. Arkadelphia participants are housed on-campus and the off campus site for the Academy is a commuter site (location to be announced mid-February). This is Henderson's eleventh year to host the ESL Academy with ADE. The popular program attracts about 150 to 200 participants each year. Many participants in the Academy tell us the Academy changed the way they teach, not only ESL students, but every student in their classroom.
