Clinical Mental Health Counseling (M.S.)

Welcome to HSU’s Counselor Education Department. Perhaps you have arrived here because you are considering a carrer as a Mental Health Counselor. We believe that you will find that working as a counselor, whether it be in the community, the schools, the prisons, nursing homes or in other public and private facilities to be a very rewarding experience.
The educational curriculum at Henderson is a CACREP-accredited master’s program in Mental Health Counseling that provides the student with both traditional brick and mortar classes as well as partial online offerings that are tailored to prepare an individual for state licensure.
Your studies with us will help you to develop the theoretical knowledge base and the practical skills necessary to enable you to assess and treat mental and emotional disorders such as depression, anxiety, addiction and substance abuse, suicidal impulses, stress, trauma, low self-esteem, and grief. As a counselor you may also assist others with job and career concerns, educational decisions, and relationship problems. Additionally, you may be involved in community outreach, advocacy, and mediation activities. Some of our counselors choose to specialize in delivering mental health services for the elderly. Mental health counselors often work closely with other mental health specialists, such as psychiatrists, psychologists, clinical social workers, psychiatric nurses, and school counselors in the provision of psychological services.
On behalf of the the faculty we welcome you. The purpose of this site is to familiarize you with our Degree in Clinical Mental Health and help you plan your course of study should you decide to pursue your educational goals with us.
Sincerely,
Michael S. Kelly Ed.D., LPC
