International Student Admissions

Welcome to the international admissions page.  On this page you will find everything you need to know about how to apply to Henderson State University as an international undergraduate or graduate student.  The following admissions information applies both to undergraduate and graduate international students:

Medical insurance is mandatory and may be purchased through Henderson. The cost is approximately $89 per month and it is payable along with tuition. The insurance fee is due in the fall and spring semester.

Upon arrival at Henderson you must have enough money with you to pay for tuition, fees, insurance, books, and housing.  Students will also need spending money to buy personal items such as: bedding, soaps, towels, etc . .

Upon receiving a letter of admission, international students should contact the Office of Residence Life at (870) 230-5083, or HSU Box 7554, or e-mail reslife@hsu.edu, so that living arrangements can be secured in one of the residence halls if such services are needed.

Students should consult the Planning and Arrival Information page for dates on which they must arrive at Henderson. Travel from the Little Rock, Arkansas airport for new students can be arranged by the Center for International Programs Office only on dates specified in the Planning and Arrival Information. Students who arrive on these dates must submit an Airport Greeting Request to the Center for International Programs Office. Students arriving before these specified dates must make their own transportation arrangements to Henderson and they must find temporary accommodations. Students arriving after these specified dates will not be greeted at the airport and may not be admitted to Henderson. All new international students must attend New International Student Orientation

All international students entering Henderson must attend a mandatory international student orientation at the beginning of the semester. 

Undergraduate Admission Requirements

International undergraduate students must:
• Be enrolled full-time (at least 12 hours per semester)
• Keep a valid passport
• Notify the International Programs Office of any changes of address
• Obtain permission for off-campus employment
• Maintain HSU international student health and accident insurance
• Live on campus if under 21 and unmarried

The following documentation is required:
• A completed, signed and dated Application for Admission of International Students  Online Application for Admission of International Students.

• A $30 non-refundable application fee paid in U.S. dollars in the form of a bank draft, money order, or personal check. 

• Official TOEFL score of at least 500 paper based, 173 computer based, or 61 Internet based. The Henderson State University code number is 6272. A score of 5 on IELTS is also acceptable.

• A completed financial statement form verifying that you can financially support yourself while a student in the United States. The financial statement should show that the student has at least $17,396 (USD) to cover tuition, fees, room and board, mandatory health insurance, and books and other course related expenses. This amount is an estimate based on a student who takes 12 credit hours per semester and resides in a double occupancy university dorm room and purchases a 15 meal per week meal plan. The exact cost of tuition, fees, room and board, and health insurance will be calculated at the time of registration, but you may use our cost and fee sheet, found here, to better estimate your expenses. Henderson no longer offers out of state tuition waivers to international students.

• Official scores from the SAT or ACT exam must be submitted to Henderson State University. Official scores for the SAT exam must be sent to Henderson directly from theCollege Board. Official scores for the ACT exam must be sent to Henderson directly from the American College Testing Service. Copies of results submitted by students will not be acceptable.

• A certified transcript in English--listing courses, examinations, grades, and marks, including proof of graduation.

• Provide all vaccination records.  Required immunizations can be found here.

When the above requirements are satisfactorily completed, you will receive letter of admission and an I-20 form. In order to obtain your travel visa to enter the United States you must present this document to the American Consulate or Embassy in your country.

Graduate Admission Requirements

International graduate students must:
• Be enrolled full-time (at least 6 hours per semester)
• Keep a valid passport
• Notify the International Programs Office of any change of address
• Obtain permission for off-campus employment
• Maintain HSU international student health and accident insurance
• Live on campus if under 21 and unmarried

In order to be considered for admission to graduate school, an international student must produce a complete set of official credentials to establish that he/she meets all requirements for full admission to the particular program for which application is made. An international student is not eligible for conditional admission. A complete list of credentials required for admission consideration are as follows: completed, signed, and dated application for admission of international students. Please return the necessary paper work as listed via mail with a U.S. money order for $75. The Graduate School will then determine your eligibility for admission. Files must be completed by November 30th for spring admission and June 30th for fall).

• Provide evidence of a TOEFL score of 600 paper based, or 250 computer based, or 100 Internet based. We will also accept a score of at least 6.5 on the IELTS. Henderson State University code number is 6272.

• A completed financial statement form verifying that you can financially support yourself while a student in the United States.

• The financial statement should show that the student has at least $13,964 (USD) to cover tuition, fees, room and board, mandatory health insurance, and books and other course related expenses. This amount is an estimate based on a student who takes 6 credit hours per semester and resides in a double occupancy university dorm room and purchases a 15 meal per week meal plan. The exact cost of tuition, fees, room and board, and health insurance will be calculated at the time of registration. Henderson no longer offers out of state tuition waivers to international students.

• Provide a certified transcript(s) in English from an accredited translation agency, indicating satisfactory preparation to enter the graduate college.

• Provide all vaccination records.  Required immunizations can be found here

When the above requirements are satisfactorily completed, you will receive a letter of admission and an I-20 form. In order to obtain your travel visa to enter the United States, you must present this document to the American Consulate or Embassy in your country.

If an International Student is chosen for a graduate assistantship, ALL paperwork and documentation must be complete and turned into the Graduate Office by the first day of registration in order for an International Student to qualify for a graduate assistantship. If any aspect of the student's paper work is not complete by the end of the first day of registration, then that position will be assigned to another student or will go unfilled for the remainder of the semester.

International Transfer Students

Students who are interested in transferring to Henderson State University from another school in the United States should take the following steps to be admitted:
• Fill out the International Application. Please check that you are a transfer student.
• Turn in official transcripts from the university that you are currently attending.
• Transfer students must have at least a 2.00 cumulative grade point average from the U.S. college or university they attended to be admitted to Henderson State University.
• Turn in a financial bank statement showing the amount of $17,396 US dollars.
• Print out the transfer form below, fill out the top half and submit it to the school you are currently attending. Once the form is filled out by the International Advisor or Director at your current school, turn it into the Office of the Center for International Programs at Henderson.

If you are a student who is currently studying outside the United States and would like to be considered as a transfer student at Henderson, you will need to turn your transcripts into a credential evaluation service first, before we can consider you a transfer student. This process must be done before the admission process can be completed.

International Student Testing Requirements

• Students from countries where English is not the first language must submit evidence of having completed the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Undergraduate applicants must have a minimum score of 500 paper based, or 173 computer based, or 61 Internet based. Henderson will also accept a score of at least 5.0 on the IELTS. Graduate applicants must have a score of 550 paper based, or 213 computer based, or 80 Internet based. We will also accept a score of at least 6.0 on the IETLS.
• Students must submit official ACT or SAT test scores before registering for classes. The results of this test will decide the student's placement in classes.
• Students who score below a 19 on the ACT Test in English, mathematics, or reading will be required to take remedial courses before advancing to college level courses in these areas. Remedial courses shall not provide credit toward a degree. This policy applies to all undergraduate students attending Henderson State University.
