FAQs

Can I participate in band or choir if I am not a music major?
Yes! Approximately 50% of the students in our performing ensembles major in something other than music.

Can I receive a music scholarship if I am not a music major?
Absolutely! Many students in our performing ensembles receive music scholarships regardless of their major.

Can I receive a music scholarship if I am also receiving an academic scholarship?
One of the reasons that Henderson State University is so affordable for students who participate in band and choir is that they are able to combine academic and music scholarships. It is quite possible that a degree from H.S.U. will be significantly less expensive than a degree from any other university in the region.

Is there scholarship money available for being in the Showband of Arkansas colorguard?
Yes. While colorguard auditions take place in the spring semester, scholarship priority is given to potential colorguard members who also audition earlier on their band instrument.

Is my music scholarship guaranteed for 4 years?
Scholarships are renewable for 4 years. Each semester, students must have enrolled in and completed 15 credit hours with a 2.5 GPA for renewal of scholarship for the following semester.

How do I audition for a music scholarship?
The Henderson State University Department of Music holds official scholarship audition days in both the fall and spring semesters. If these dates do not fit your schedule, you are encouraged to contact us to schedule an individual audition time. You can find all of the necessary information on our Auditions and Scholarships page.

How many hours a week do the band and choir rehearse?
The band rehearses approximately 3-6 hours per week and the choir rehearses 3-5 hours per week (depending upon the ensemble).
