Graduate studies at a liberal arts university?

Abstract?  Theoretical?  Part of the "Ivory Tower?"  Nothing could be further from the truth.
The liberal arts are the foundation of all fields of endeavor at the university.  Every profession is based on knowledge and skills that come from the fields of study that make up the liberal arts.  A good liberal arts education provides the basic skills necessary to adapt, to grow, and to change.
The liberal arts enable students to reach beyond their own experiences and imagine worlds far distant in time and place, as well as to investigate and make sound judgments.  The experience of majoring in a particular field teaches what it means to go beyond the surface of things in a disciplined manner.
For the national and world economies, there is an inherent paradox in the idea that the liberal arts are somehow useless in the vocation-based world; however, most of what one learns in a vocation-based curriculum will be quickly rendered obsolete.

~Paraphrased from Why Study the Liberal Arts? by Leon Botstein, President of Bard College
