General Overview
Purpose:
The purpose of the mentoring program at Henderson State University is to enhance the quality of educational experiences and the knowledge of campus and community resources for first-generation college students.
The Mentoring Program at Henderson State University strives to increase campus positivity and retention by providing first-generation college students with a knowledgeable faculty, staff, alumni, or peer mentor to help them the transition to campus life and beyond.
Pairings:
Mentors and mentees are paired according to their academic, professional, social, and cultural interests.
Participant Requirements
Mentee:
• Must be a first-generation college student, meaning that neither parent or guardian has completed a four-year college degree
• Must commit to participating in the program for a full academic year, but may continue on beyond that, if so desired
• Must attend a minimum of two program-sponsored events and one social event per semester
• Must maintain weekly contact with mentor (via phone, email, face-to-face, Facebook, etc.)
• Must provide feedback to the mentor program coordinator
• Must be Henderson faculty, staff, alumni, or upperclassman
• Must commit to participating in the program for a full academic year, but may continue on beyond that, if so desired
• Must complete one Mentor Information Session
• Must provide feedback to the mentor program coordinator
• Must maintain weekly contact with mentee(s) (via phone, email, face-to-face, Facebook, etc.)
