Bachelor of Science in Chemistry
|
Students graduating with a chemistry major have exciting opportunities in industry, education, or government agencies. Employment opportunities include important areas such as environmental protection, pharmaceutical research, instrumentation, energy research, forensic chemistry, and the traditional areas of basic research and development. Chemists are needed in all of these areas due to a decline in graduating B.S. chemists in the past number of years. Graduate school is also an option and is an important second step in preparing a student to be an effective researcher. Over the years students graduating from Henderson have had excellent success in acceptance to graduate school, while many others have been successful in industry and government agencies.
Many opportunities in the health professions such as medicine, veterinary medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, medical technology, optometry, radiological technology, and others exist. Henderson graduates have done well in professional schools. The degree is offered through the Department of Chemistry of the Ellis College.

Pre-Dentistry
|
Henderson’s program is intended to prepare students interested in dentistry for admission to most dental schools. The pre-dentistry program provides the necessary coursework for admission to dental school; however, more than one half of the students admitted to dental school obtain a B.S. in chemistry or biology prior to attending dental school. Because admission to dental school is competitive, students should consider completing a B.S. Students should contact the dental school of their choice for exact requirements. Application forms for the Dental Admissions Testing Program may be obtained from the pre-dental advisor.

The course requirements at Henderson satisfy the minimum 66 total semester hours required for admission to LSU. It also satisfies the requirements for admission to most other veterinary schools. LSU also requires scores from the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) or the Graduate Record Exam. Other veterinary schools may have other requirements.
