Dance Program:
The HSU Dance Program's minor enables dance students to hone their skills and deepen their technical ability in order to become strong versatile dancers. With a faculty that is rich in professional experience, the program offers the opportunity to study and perform in all three major dance techniques of ballet, jazz, and modern. 

Company 

Jennifer Maddox is currently an artist in residence at Henderson State University; where she has been the dance program director, instructor, and the HSU dance company director and choreographer for 21 years.

HSU's dance program is integrated with our communication & theatre programs, giving our dance students unique opportunities to grow and explore multiple disciplines. Additionally, our guest artist programs offer dance students further opportunities for training and performance.

HSU DANCE COMPANY--with an audition, any dancer may become part of this diverse performing group.  The company gives concerts, lectures, demonstrations, and master classes throughout the year both on campus and off.

American College Dance Festival-- Dancers have the opportunity to participate in and perform at American College Dance Festival which is held in eight different regions of the country. Student works are selected to be performed and (ACDFA) adjudicated at the regional American College Dance Festival.

Guest artist master classes are free & open for participation; & the rep rehearsals, informances, & showcases are open for observation.

Previous Guest Artists:

Marlies Yearby:  directed & choreographed critically acclaimed new works for stage, film & video that explore humanity & the real world. Recipient of a 1996 Tony Award Nomination for her choreography of the musical, RENT Her company, Movin' Spirits Dance Theater is a vehicle for the creation of new multimedia works examining the human experience.

Chet Walker:  Creator & Co-Choreographer of Tony & multi-international-award-winning FOSSE, Chet has directed and choreographed original new musicals & other original works ranging from CIRQUE DU SOLEIL, to works created for Compania Internacional de Teatro Musical , the international Jazz/Musical Theater Dance Company which he co-artistic directs in Buenos Aires, Argentina, & to JACOB’S PILLOW where he serves as Director of the Jazz Program.

Eva Tessler:  choreographer, director, performer (dancer/actor), & teacher is a native of Mexico City. In the 80’s Tessler danced, acted, choreographed & taught in Brazil at the Universidade Estadual de Campinas in São Paulo. Now in Tucson, Tessler has choreographed modern dance & dance theater works through the Zenith Dance Collective/Body Prints Theatre. Tessler is Artistic Associate of Borderlands Theater where she choreographs & directs, & is a member of Bloodhut Productions, a group of women who write & perform their own stories.

Irruption: Music and Dance Collaboration: Irruption is the music and dance collaboration between Minneapolis-St. Paul MN based Jane Anfinson and David Wick.  Irruption's performances incorporates their training in modern dance technique with immediate impulses and sensations, blending improvisation with "choreographed" movement.

Micki Saba:received her dance training in the Dallas area & is a graduate of the SMU Dance Department. She was a member of Dancers' Unlimited for over 10 years. Micki has worked with companies such as Arkansas Ballet, Garland Civic Theatre, & Deep Ellum Opera. Currently, she is on faculty at both Brookhaven College & the University of Texas at Dallas. She is a resident artist with Young Audiences of Greater Dallas & works independently as a choreographer, dancer & teacher.

 LaJAZDANZ Project with guest artists Frank Vega & Aaron Girlinghouse: Daily master classes with an informance at the end of the residency.  Professional Jazz dancers, conversant also in Ballet and Modern, thier choreography creates a powerful fusion of original Jazz styles with other forms ranging from classical Ballet to popular street dance.

Dance Minor Courses:  Requires 8hrs from: Dance History, Choreography, Dance Performance Practicum, Ballet I; AND 6hrs Electives from: Ballet II, Jazz I, Jazz II, Theatre Dance I, Theatre Dance II, Modern Dance & Dance Company.
