Dr. Charles Dunn cuts the ribbon to officially open the new recreation center named in his honor.
Henderson State University celebrated the official grand opening of the Charles D. Dunn Student Recreation Center on Thursday, Oct. 15. The new facility provides recreational health and fitness opportunities for the campus community.
The 48,000-square-foot recreation center includes: three basketball courts; an elevated, indoor walking track; a state-of-the-art weight room; a cardiovascular room; multi-purpose room; an activities room; climbing wall; intramural sports; and various other wellness opportunities.
Construction began on the center during the spring of 2008. It opened in April 2009 at a final cost of $6.9 million. The architect for the project was SCM Architects P.A., and Kinco Constructors LLC was the general contractor. Kristopher Dunn is the center’s director.
The project originated when the Student Government Association presented a proposal to the Board of Trustees to build and fund the center, and approve a recreation center fee of $125 per semester. The SGA named the center after Dr. Charles D. Dunn who served as president of Henderson for 22 years before his retirement in 2008`.
