Henderson State University’s newly-formed “Reddie” Trumpet Guild will present Dr. Tom Strait in residence at Henderson Nov. 17-19. In addition to working with trumpet students, Strait will present a master class on Nov. 18 at 4 p.m. A recital featuring his skills as a classical and jazz trumpet player will be held on Nov. 19 at 7:30 p.m.
Strait will be assisted by Dr. Hee-Kyung Juhn on piano, Dr. Rick Dimond on piano, Byron Yancey on bass, and Dr. Robert Houston on drums. Both events, which are open to the public, will be in Russell Fine Arts Center’s Harwood Recital Hall. Admission is free.
Currently in his eighth year on the faculty at Minnesota State University-Moorhead, Strait is chair of the music department and professor of trumpet and horn. He holds a doctor of arts degree in trumpet performance from the University of Northern Colorado, as well as degrees from the University of Texas and Henderson State University.
Before coming to Minnesota State University-Moorhead, Strait taught for several years at both the university and public school levels and served in the U.S. Air Force, playing with the USAF Academy Falconaires. An active freelance trumpet player, he has performed with many artists, including Bob Hope, Robert Goulet, Nancy Wilson and Doc Severinsen. Strait’s past teachers include William Pfund, Raymond Crisara and Donald Kramer. He is a Yamaha performing artist.
