Co-teaching

Some schools within the Southwest –A ERZ Partnership have been classified as being under academic distress, largely due to the relatively low academic achievement group scores of various identified subpopulations under the Arkansas Comprehensive School Improvement Plan (ACSIP). In ERZ needs assessments, administrators and staff from these schools have consistently acknowledged the urgency for assistance in identifying and implementing strategies and techniques, which will improve the academic performance of their special education students. Further, several schools have begun attempts at co-teaching in an effort to increase the academic achievement of this subpopulation and have also asked for assistance with these co-teaching efforts. Teachers and administrators have mentioned consistently a lack of knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary to successfully implement effective collaborative and co-teaching efforts. Our plan created collaborative teams (Henderson and public school ) and discipline specific teams across schools (P-6 reading, 7-12 Math &7-12 Science teams) to assist the development of effective collaboration and co-teaching efforts in teacher education and public school settings. We provide a series of workshops (whole-group and discipline specific), on-site workshops (of Henderson and school members and others at each school site), and on-site mentoring visits in co-teach settings to support the development of more effective inclusive education practices.
