HENDERSON STATE UNIVERSITY
SUGGESTED PROGRAM FOR PRE-VETERINARY MEDICINE
Since there is no school of veterinary medicine in Arkansas, prospective veterinarians must go out of state to earn the veterinary degree. The State of Arkansas does, however, have contractual arrangements with those surrounding states that have veterinary schools. Currently Arkansas has 16 spaces at LSU, 3 at Tuskegee University, 3 at Oklahoma State University and up to 3 spaces at the University of Missouri.
The following schedule satisfies the specific course requirements and minimum of 66 total semester hours requirement for admission to LSU. It also satisfies the requirements for admission to most other veterinary schools. LSU also requires scores from the Medical College Admissions Test(MCAT) or the Graduate Record Exam (GRE). Other veterinary schools may require the Veterinary Aptitude Test (VAT), the MCAT, the GRE or all three. The MCAT, VAT or GRE must be taken no later than the autumn prior to the year in which admission is desired.

While it is possible for a student to complete the above pre-veterinary course requirements in 4 semesters, it is recommended that they be spread over 6 semesters with the inclusion of courses from the fields of psychology, sociology, humanities, U.S. history, political science, computer science and additional upper level courses in biology and chemistry. All students should be pursuing a bachelor's degree in some field. Requirements for such a degree can normally be met in a total of 7 or 8 semesters of course work.
