Purpose:
The Praxis Series is an Educational Testing Service (ETS) program that provides tests and other services for states to use as part of their teacher certification process. The three categories of assessments in The Praxis Series correspond to the three milestones in the development of a teacher: entering the teacher training program, graduating from college and entering the profession, and the first year of teaching. The state of Arkansas requires prospective teachers to take the Praxis I and the following tests of the Praxis II Series: the Principles of Learning & Teaching and the Specialty Area tests. Teacher candidates should consult the state supplement, the Praxis Arkansas Web page, or state department for current requirements. PRAXIS Registration Bulletins are available online at http://www.ets.org/Media/Tests/PRAXIS/pdf/01361.pdf

Description:

Praxis I: Academic Skills Assessments measure reading, writing, and mathematical skills. The assessments are available on computer. Each measures the basic academic skills vital to all teacher candidates. Henderson education majors are required to take the Praxis I Series when enrolled in EDE 2000L PLT LAB I.

Praxis I Computer-Based Tests (PI-CBT) in Reading, Mathematics, and Writing contain computer- delivered questions that require selecting single or multiple responses, highlighting or reordering information, or providing a constructed response. Each testing session is two hours to allow sufficient time for tutorials on computer use, the test itself, and the collection of background information for score reporting. (The computer-based tests can be taken at any Prometric Testing Center or ETS center. Henderson State University has a Prometric Testing Center in the Caplinger Airway Science Academic Center. Contact the Testing Center for information regarding computer testing.)

Praxis II: Subject Assessments measure knowledge the candidate will teach. They also measure the general and subject-specific pedagogical skills and knowledge.   These tests are paper-based tests administered by Debbie Buck.

Principles of Learning & Teaching (PLT)
Subject Assessments/Specialty Area Tests (various subjects)
School Leaders Licensure Assessment (SLLA)
School Superintendent Assessment (SSA)

Praxis III: Classroom Performance Assessments are used to evaluate all aspects of a beginning teacher's classroom performance.
