Attention 6th grade teachers! WOW your students with dissection! Teaching and learning about the functions and tissues of animal organs has never been so much fun. This professional development will provide hands-on experience with dissection that you can use to teach the life science frameworks in your classroom.

Enhancing Biology Lessons with Technology

Lunch will be provided
Increase interest in your Biology lessons as well as teach concepts appropriate for the EOC test by using Texas Instruments graphing calculators and Vernier probes and sensors. Experiments taught include Energy from Foods (temperature probes), Cell Respiration (CO2 sensors), the Effect of Temperature on Cold-Blooded Animals (O2 sensors), and Enzyme Action (O2 sensors). Two calculator lessons will also be included. Participants will be able to check out these probes and sensors after the training to use in their classrooms.

Participants will engage in a variety of strategies that help children learn observation techniques, organize data collection and develop meaningful relationships between the activities using science notebooks. These will include questioning techniques (oral and written), group and class charts, student constructed data charts, constructing inferences from observations, identifying variables, making dependable predictions, finding evidence to prove your theory and writing activity-appropriate conclusions. Everyday Science Mysteries by NSTA Press and a bound copy of the lesson used in the professional development.

This session provides real-world applications of measurement, proportions, graphing, and problem solving. The book “Finding Your Bearings” developed by the AIMS (Activities Integrating Mathematics and Science) Education Foundation will be used to investigate, estimate, observe and interpret data. You will leave with this book which contains 29 activities with questions that will help you lead your students to a greater understanding of math, science and geography.
