*These six hours meet the general education requirement normally fulfilled by Masters of Western Literature (ENG 2683).

**The department strongly recommends that students choose elective courses that will expose them to a broad range of genres and historical periods.

In order to receive a degree with a major in English, a student must complete a minimum of six (6) semester hours of upper-division work with a grade of "C" or better in English at Henderson, regardless of the number of hours of transfer credit.

English majors must also complete twelve (12) hours in a foreign language, including six (6) hours at the intermediate level.


BA in English with Teacher Licensure

In addition to the requirements listed above, students seeking English teaching certification must take a minimum of six hours in the same modern foreign language and must take ENG 3163- Modern Grammar, ENG 4453-Advanced Composition, and the Professional Education Curriculum for Secondary Teachers (listed under Secondary Education in School of Education chapter), and fulfill the requirements for Education Track BA/BS (shown in The Senior College section of Undergraduate Curricula chapter).

**If students minoring in English desire to be certified to teach, they must take an additional three hours of electives and ENG 4453-Advanced Composition. English minors taking the Survey of American Literature must choose elective courses in English literature; likewise, those taking the Survey of English Literature must choose elective courses in American literature.


Writing Specialization Minor (18 hours)

The writing specialization minor in English is designed for students planning to enter careers or professions, such as business, law, public administration, the sciences, and other areas in which writing ability is a crucial qualification.

*Elementary-level Spanish courses do not count toward the Spanish major in the B.A. program. Students not earning credit in SPA 2033 and/or SPA 2043 must take an additional 6 hours of directed electives.

Students are required to take both HIS 1013 and HIS 1023, Civilization to 1660 and Civilization since 1660, both of which may be applied toward the Social Science General Education requirement, and they are strongly encouraged to take GEO 2163, World Geography.
