Nov. 5, 2009
By Cody Qualls
Henderson State had an opportunity to earn the third seed in the Gulf South Conference tournament with a win against Arkansas Tech (24-12, 8-4 GSC) on Thursday night at the Duke Wells Center in Arkadelphia. But the Lady Reddies dropped a highly competitive five set match by scores of 22-25, 25-20, 15-25, 25-21, 15-10.
It was senior night, as Henderson State seniors Bethany Wright (20 digs, two assists), Tatiana Kuhn (20 kills, nine digs), Dalia Serra (16 assists) and Tagata Fo’a (12 assists, two digs) were honored after the match for their contributions to the Lady Reddie program.
The HSU seniors will lead the team into action next week at the Conference Tournament in Searcy, Ark. on the campus of Harding University. HSU will play the #1 seed from Eastern Division, (West Florida, West Alabama, or North Alabama), Friday afternoon at 2:30.
If the squad can win their opening match in the GSC Tournament, the Lady Reddies will have at least one match on Saturday afternoon, potentially two if the team can make it to the championship game Saturday night.
Henderson State had its chances on Thursday night against Tech. After splitting the first two sets, HSU outhit the Golden Suns .370 to 0.74 in the third set and won the game by 10 points. But ATU took the final two games for the win, and the #3 spot in the GSC Western Division.
Shawana Watkins had one of her best all around games of the season, with nine kills, two assists, six digs and four solo blocks, While Melissa Silva totaled three service aces and 12 digs.
