Lady Reddies Drop 5 Set Match at Christian Brothers
Oct. 16, 2009
By Cody Qualls
Henderson State dominated action early in the match Thursday night against Christian Brothers in Memphis, Tenn., taking the first two sets by scores of 25-12 and 25-19. But the Lady Bucs regained their momentum and won the third and fourth sets, 25-19 and 25-20, setting up a fifth and deciding set in the Gulf South Conference clash.
The Lady Reddies took a commanding 13-7 lead in the fifth frame, only two points away from moving their conference record to 6-1. But CBU again battled back with six straight points to tie the game 13-13. After a point by HSU, the Lady Bucs scored the next three to take the set and match, 16-14.
Tatiana Kuhn had a rare off-night offensively for Henderson State, as the senior totaled 14 kills but committed 10 attack errors for a hitting percentage of .077. Kuhn did manage to add 23 digs, and Henderson State hit for a higher attack percentage than the Lady Bucs, .205 to .159.
The front row continued to play good defensively for HSU with nine team blocks, including three by Dalia Serra and two by both Shawana Watkins and Michelle Long.
But the Lady Reddies could not overcome twenty attack errors, four serving errors and five receiving errors on Thursday night.
Robin Law contributed 13 kills and five digs, while Watkins added 10 kills. Serra (22) and senior Tagata Fo’a (13) led the team in set assists, while All-American libero Bethany Wright had a match high 27 digs.
Henderson State will begin play in the HSU Invitational beginning on Friday against West Alabama at 5:30 in Arkadelphia, Ark. in the Duke Wells Center. The Lady Reddies will then play host to Alabama-Huntsville on Saturday morning at 10 a.m.
