| A Note from The Alumni Director |
The Alumni Office is on the road. On March 7 we held an event in Little Rock at Diamond Bear Brewery hosted by Russ Melton ('78) which was an outstanding event and enjoyed by many. We have made plans for events in Pine Bluff at the Family Room of Pine Bluff High School on March 15 and Houston, TX on April 5 at Canyon Cafe. For more information on these events please contact the alumni office. We are busy taking Henderson to local Reddies. We hope that if we are ever in your area that you will come out and visit with us. And if we don't have an opportunity to come to your area, you are always welcome to campus, and while you are here on campus please do not forget to stop by the Barkman House and let us know so that we may assist you. If you need anything from Henderson--and we do mean anything-- please do not hesitate to give us a call toll free at 1-877-RED-ALUM (733-2586), and as always send us your suggestions and, of course, your news. alumni@hsu.edu

Whitfield Outlines Steps to Entrepreneurial Success
Mike Whitfield, an Honors College and School of Business graduate in finance at Henderson State University, has become a well-accomplished entrepreneur in just a short amount of time. Whitfield returned to Henderson recently to speak about the different ways that he achieves success, which he labeled the "Five Secrets of an Entrepreneur" and to be honored as the Entrepreneur of the Year by Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE).
Doing what one loves is one of the main keys to success for an entrepreneur, he said. Whitfield's advice was to not focus on money, because this will lead to several problems, which includes cutting corners. If a person does what he loves, he will put in the time to do what it takes to be successful. Whitfield suggested that fear stops people from going after something they love. People realize that everything does not come easy, and it can be hard to deal with failure, but if the end goal is something the individual enjoys, then it's all worth it.

Nursing Class Rates 100 Percent on Test
Dr. Rebecca Patterson has a sly grin on her face when she shows the certificate she received from the Arkansas State Board of Nursing. The achievement is partly due to the dedication and work of the faculty, changes in departmental testing, she says, and part of it is "pure luck."
The 2004 baccalaureate class of the Henderson State University Department of Nursing students had a 100 percent pass rate for the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX). All 19 students who took the test passed it.
Patterson received a certificate of excellence from the state nursing board commending the department and the university for the students' achievement.

Angelou, Audience Connect to Embrace Literature
She was dressed in a red velvet-sheened gown and pearls. She smiled. She sang. She laughed a heart-felt guffaw. She joked. She confessed to her foibles. She quoted poetry that many had never heard before. And she and the audience fell in love with each other.Maya Angelou appeared on the stage of the Arkansas Hall auditorium on March 3 to exhort the capacity crowd of 1,000 to embrace literature "to find the rainbows in the sky," as her grandmother and uncle in Stamps had taught her and her older brother, Bailey, to do in the 1920s. Her appearance was one of the C. Vann Woodward Lectures in Southern History and Literature sponsored by Henderson State University.
