Staff Award for Diversity and Inclusion

The Henderson State University Diversity & Inclusion Award is administered by the Staff Recognition Awards Committee. It is awarded to a staff member who works well with people of diverse personalities, learning styles, and life experiences, as well as group or social differences including race, ethnicity, class, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic, country of origin, cultural, political, religious, or other affiliations. The recipient sought out, valued, and utilized the knowledge and experiences of the diverse community. This honor is awarded once a year.

The honoree should exhibit superior performance in the following areas:

  • Calls attention to comments, behaviors, or practices that may be perceived as unfair, biased, or critical towards people with different backgrounds and beliefs; does not tolerate practices that promote biases or stereotyping
  • Encourages and promotes practices that support diversity; reviews policies and practices to make sure they do not affect people adversely from different demographic or cultural groups
  • Enjoys working with people who come from different backgrounds; shows appreciation for the values and histories of other people; strives to learn from people whose backgrounds and experiences are different from his/her own
  • Sensitive to cultural differences and beliefs; shows respect for the beliefs and traditions of others; avoids doing or saying things that might offend others

All classified and non-classified members in good standing with the university and with at least 6 months of continuous service can be nominated for the Diversity & Inclusion Award. Nominee must hold a position lower than the level of vice-president.


  • Award certificate to be presented at the Staff Awards Luncheon
  • $500 monetary award (this is considered taxable compensation to the recipient in accordance with the IRS code)
  • An invitation to a presidential luncheon with other award winners
