Undergraduate Catalog 2008-2010 PRINT PAGE
Dr. Patti Miley, Chair; Ms. Baker, Ms. Good, Ms. Posey, Didactic Director

An integrated liberal arts undergraduate education in Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) empowers students to become professionals who will enable individuals and families to manage the challenges of living and working in a diverse global society.  In congruence with Henderson's liberal arts mission, we seek to prepare individuals for family and community life and careers by providing opportunities to develop requisite knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behaviors.  This is accomplished in a nurturing educational environment that is rich in academic exposure and solid practical application of theories related to the disciplines encompassed within the field of FCS.  Central to our focus as a department is innovative and technologically sound instruction and service through scientifically based programs.

Our unique challenges include the following:
• To provide an educational environment where teaching and preparation of students is accomplished through traditional classroom experiences, laboratories, practicums, and internships.
• To positively affect student attitudes toward quality work, self-discipline, ethical behavior, and team work.
• To model effective performance from the various specializations of FCS.

The objectives of the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences are to train teachers for effective work in the family and consumer sciences (occupational and homemaking) programs of the public schools of Arkansas; to provide subject matter for those who desire to work in occupational areas such as business, child care, dietetics, fashion merchandising, and foods and nutrition where family and consumer sciences training is essential or valuable and for those who want to elect courses for personal interest.
