Curricular Practical Training

Curricular Practical Training is defined by regulations as "integral part of an established curriculum," alternate work study, internship, or practicum

  1. Student must have been in valid F-1 status for one year
  2. Must be an integral part of established curriculum in the student's field of study
  3. Student must have an actual offer from an employer
  4. Student must receive written authorization from DSO, who records the CPT in SEVIS and issues a SEVIS I-20 with notation before work begins. USCIS approval is not required and no fee is involved
  5. Students may engage in CPT only for a specific employer and specific time approved and recorded by DSO in SEVIS
  6. CPT can be approved for part time (when school is in session) or full time during school vacation
  7. Use of full-time CPT for one year or more eliminates eligibility for Optional Practical Training
  8. Student is language training (ESL) are not eligible for CPT
