The Department of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Athletic Training at Henderson State University is well known both statewide and regionally for its outstanding majors at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. It has been a trendsetter and leader throughout the state and region since the mid 1950’s. The mission of HPER is based on the humanistic approach, where students are the number one priroity. Because of this, Henderson's HPER-AT faculty are second to none. They are highly qualified, enthusiastic and committed to quality teaching, advising, research, and community service. Henderson's HPER-AT Department is a trendsetter and a leader in the state. It is part of the Teacher's College, Henderson.
The goals of Henderson State University's Department of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Athletic Training are:
(1) the development of the knowledge and competencies necessary for effiecient body movement, maintenance, and optimal health;
(2) to provide for the development of leisure skills involving physical activity;
(3) to create an awareness and appreciation of the social, psychological, and aesthetic significance of physical activity;
(4) to provide wholesome social and recreational opportunies through informal, as well as organized activities;
(5) to provide the public schools of the state with competent teachers of physical education;
(6) to provide services for surrounding communities;
(7) to provide the leisure service industry with competent professionals; and
(8) to prepare athletic trainers to enter into the profession either in public schools or health care agencies.
