Biochemistry

Chemistry is often referred to as the central science, because chemistry plays a vital role in most other science disciplines. Specifically, biochemistry sits at the interface between biology and chemistry.  An undergraduate degree in chemistry with the biochemistry track prepares students for a wide variety of careers, both in and out of the laboratory. 

Whether you plan to enter industry, graduate school or professional school, Henderson State's Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry can prepare you to meet your goals. In addition to a strong knowledge base, the program emphasizes mastery of skills such as problem solving, oral and written communication, and experimentation that are necessary for a successful career and life.

Students work side by side with excellent faculty in exceptional facilities performing exciting research that prepares them for graduate school or going directly into industry. Students can present their research at a number of conferences including the American Chemical Society national meeting.

Our department's professors specialize in many different areas of chemistry, which provides a broad and complete coverage of the field.  This allows professors to teach in their areas of specialty and provides opportunities for students completing undergraduate research to work with faculty members who are researching in areas of interest to students. The hands-on research and experience our students gain, in addition to excellent training by faculty members, can give them an advantage toward future success.

Students graduating with a degree in our department have exciting opportunities in industry, education, or professional careers, such as medical, dental or opthamological professional studies. Employment options include important areas such as environmental protection, pharmaceutical research, instrumentation, energy research, forensic chemistry, and the traditional areas of basic research and development. Chemists are in demand in all of these areas due to a decline in recent graduates with a four-year degree in the field. Graduate school is also an option and is an important second step in preparing a student to be an effective researcher. Over the years students graduating from Henderson State have had excellent success in acceptance to professional schools, and have been successful in their careers.
