Report from the AAACL Fall Workshop

Wrenette Tedder and Daniel Fitzroy presented a report on the key takeaways from the Arkansas Association for the Assessment of Collegiate Learning (AAACL) Fall 2014 Workshop.  On Tuesday, November 4th, Wrenette Tedder, Daniel Fitzroy, and David Evans attended the AAACL Fall 2014 Workshop at Harding University in Searcy, AR.  The workshop featured Dr. Linda Suskie and focused primarily on understanding and using assessment results.  Much discussion ensued regarding what makes good assessment, how to keep assessment sustainable, ways of creating a culture of assessment, and methods for sharing assessment results.

Dr. Adkison purchased about 24 copies of Dr. Suskie’s book, Assessing Student Learning: A Common Sense Guide, which will be distributed to all chairs as an assessment resource.

Higher Learning Commission (HLC) Update. HLC Liaison Dr. Jeff Rosen visited Henderson State University on December 4th and had individual meetings with the Steering Committee and each Criterion Committee.  The main purpose of his visit was to introduce the committees to the new accreditation standards and the new electronic platform that will be used to submit the Assurance Argument.  Dr. Rosen also fielded questions that committee members may have had regarding the requirements for their particular criterion.

The Assurance Argument Steering Committee has already held meetings and the Chairs of each Criterion Committee will begin meeting with their committees by the end of the Fall semester.  Because the new mission will play an integral part in all the sections of the Assurance Argument, the Criterion One Committee, whose section deals with the university’s mission, will need to finish their section first.

In addition, Dr. Adkison was able to meet with Dr. Rosen towards the end of his visit to further discuss Henderson’s efforts of completing the Assurance Argument.  Dr. Adkison stated that Dr. Rosen mentioned that he did not foresee any major challenges.  Dr. Adkison expressed his belief that all the pieces are in place to exceed the standards of the HLC, which is in part due to the work of the Assessment Team.

Assessment Newsletter. The Fall Assessment Newsletter was not sent out.  One member of the team asked whether or not the newsletter was something the team needed to continue doing.  Discussion regarding this idea will be continued by the Assessment Team in the Spring semester.
