About the President

Glendell Jones, Jr. was introduced as the 17th President of Henderson State University on March 6, 2012, making him the first African-American to serve as president or chancellor of a non-HBCU in the history of Arkansas higher education.

A 1992 accounting graduate of Henderson State University, Jones earned his juris doctor from the University of Arkansas School of Law and a master of laws in taxation from the University of Florida College of Law. Jones has held a number of positions in higher education throughout his career. These positions have included provost, senior associate vice chancellor for academic affairs and research, executive assistant to the chancellor for diversity initiatives, and associate professor of accounting. Jones has also served as an estate-planning and business-planning consultant.

President Jones currently serves on the Executive Committee of the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges (COPLAC) and as chair-elect of the NCAA Division II Presidents Council. Jones is also a member of the NCAA Board of Governors, the highest governance body in the National Collegiate Athletic Association. This board is composed of institutional chief executive officers who oversee association-wide issues. 

Jones's service to our community extends beyond higher education. He is chair of the board for Southern Bancorp, a development-centered financial institution whose focus remains on building communities and changing lives. He also serves as a board member for Baptist Health, the largest healthcare provider in the state of Arkansas. Jones is a founding officer, past president and former board member of the National Association of Diversity Officers in Higher Education, the recognized authority for promoting inclusive excellence in higher education.

President Jones is a past participant in the Harvard Seminar for New Presidents, the New Presidents Academy presented by the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU), the National Security Seminar hosted by the Army War College, Millennium Leadership Institute (AASCU), and the Institute for Educational Management at Harvard University.

President Jones is married to Sharon Jones, his wife of 21 years, and they have two outstanding children, Camille, 16, and Cameron, 11. They are members of Second Baptist Church in Arkadelphia.
