Awards and Scholarships

The  Health, Physical Education and Recreation Department gives 11 awards to outstanding senior majors at the end of each spring semester. The recipients of these awards are determined by recommendations and voting of the HPER faculty. The students considered are the students who are student teaching and/or teacher interns during the spring semester and the students who will graduate May or August of that same year. Recommendations for the physical education majors' awards are given by the physical education degree faculty. Recommendations for the recreation majors' awards are given by the recreation degree faculty. Recommendations for the athletic training majors' awards are given by the athletic training degree faculty. Recommendations for the graduate students' awards are given by the HPER graduate faculty. Recommendations for the intern award come from the HPER faculty. Guidelines for the outstanding physical education, recreation and HHP majors' nominations criteria include areas of academic success, service to the university, department and community.

The Spencer Holt Service Award is presented each year in honor of Dr. Holt, the department's Chairman from 1965-69. Dr. Holt died of a heart attack in 1969, and this award is given in his memory. The award is presented to the physical education, recreation and/or health and human performance major who has shown, not only service to the department, but also to the university and community.
