Steven M. Knight

Dr. Steven M. Knight is Director of Bands and Assistant Professor of Music at Henderson State University, where he conducts the Wind Ensemble, co-directs the Showband of Arkansas Marching Band, teaches courses in conducting and wind band repertoire, and oversees all administrative aspects of the university band program and the HSU Band Camps. Dr. Knight returned to Henderson State in 2016, having previously served on the faculty from 2010 to 2013 as Assistant Director of Bands and Interim Director of Bands. His duties during these years included conducting the Wind Ensemble, Symphony Band, Concert Band, and Chamber Winds, as well as directing both the Showband of Arkansas and the Reddie Pep Band. He also taught courses in conducting, music education, and music theory, in addition to applied low brass lessons.

Dr. Knight’s public school experience includes teaching at high schools in Odessa and Lubbock, Texas. He has served as a concert band, marching band, and low brass clinician and adjudicator in Arkansas, Texas, and New Mexico. Dr. Knight is a member of the College Band Directors National Association, the College Music Society, the Arkansas School Band and Orchestra Association, the Texas Music Educators Association, and the Texas Bandmasters Association. He is an alumni member of Kappa Kappa Psi, National Honorary Band Fraternity, and holds an honorary membership in Tau Beta Sigma, National Honorary Band Sorority.

Dr. Knight holds a Bachelor of Music degree and a Master of Music degree in Instrumental Conducting, both from Texas Tech University, and a Doctor of Musical Arts in Wind Band Conducting from the University of Texas at Austin. He has studied conducting with Jerry F. Junkin, Sarah McKoin, Gary Lewis, and Cody Birdwell.
